Optimism is an Ethereum layer 2 that executes transactions off the main chain and settles them back to Ethereum as an optimistic rollup. Its open-source OP Stack powers a family of chains called the Superchain, including Coinbase's Base. OP is the governance token. Perps let traders take a leveraged view on the layer 2 sector, hedge OP received through grants or airdrops, or short it against ETH.
Supply is a recurring theme here. Scheduled unlocks for core contributors and investors add tokens to circulation, and traders often watch open interest and funding in the days around them. Sector news matters too, from Ethereum upgrades that cut rollup costs to Superchain adoption and revenue sharing with member chains. Binance and Bybit lead volume, with OKX close behind. Pair OP with ETH perps to judge whether a move is sector-wide.

Optimism is a layer 2 network that makes Ethereum transactions cheaper by executing them off-chain and posting compressed data back to Ethereum. It assumes transactions are valid unless someone submits a fraud proof during a challenge window. The OP token governs the network through the Optimism Collective.

The Superchain is the group of layer 2 networks built on Optimism's open-source OP Stack that share standards and governance. Base, run by Coinbase, is the best-known member. Members contribute a share of sequencer revenue to the Optimism Collective, which links OP's narrative to the growth of these chains.
Unlocks add new OP to circulating supply, and traders often expect selling from recipients. That expectation can push funding negative and draw short open interest ahead of the date. The actual price reaction varies, so many traders watch funding rates and OI shifts instead of relying on the calendar alone.

Both are governance tokens for Ethereum optimistic rollups, backing different ecosystems. OP governs Optimism and the Superchain built on the OP Stack, while ARB governs Arbitrum and the chains built with its technology. Traders often treat them as a pair and trade the spread when one ecosystem gains on the other.
OP perpetual futures are derivatives contracts that track the price of OP and never expire. Instead of settling on a date, they use a funding rate to stay close to the spot price. You can go long or short with leverage without holding any OP.
Funding is a payment between longs and shorts. When OP perps trade above the index price, funding is positive and longs pay shorts. When they trade below it, shorts pay longs. Most exchanges settle every 8 hours and some, including Hyperliquid, settle every hour.

Coinperps does not give trading advice. Funding, open interest, the long/short ratio and liquidations show how other traders are positioned, but crowded positioning can last longer than expected. Size positions so a liquidation would not hurt you.
