About Gate.io

What is Gate.io?

Gate.io is a top cryptocurrency exchange founded by Lin Han in 2013 as Bter.com in China, later rebranding in 2017 after relocating to the Cayman Islands. It lists over 3,800 cryptocurrencies, supporting spot, futures, margin, and derivatives trading, along with institutional-grade APIs, advanced charting, and portfolio margin accounts.

Its perpetual futures platform offers 560+ trading pairs, handling roughly $11 billion daily from 22 million users. Traders can access up to 125x leverage on USDT- and BTC-margined contracts, benefiting from a dual-price system for fair pricing. Gate.io also features automated quant strategies, Iceberg and TWAP orders, copy trading, and unified account management to enhance execution and capital efficiency.

Gate.io Futures Fee Schedule

Gate.io charges perpetual futures traders based on a tiered fee model linked to 30-day trading volumes. Entry-level traders at VIP 0 pay maker fees of 0.0200% and taker fees of 0.0500%. As trading volume grows, fees progressively decline.

For example, at VIP 7, the maker fee drops to 0.0160% and the taker fee to 0.0375%. Top-tier VIP 16 traders, with monthly volumes exceeding $3 billion, receive the lowest rates, a 0.0000% maker fee and a 0.0160% taker fee. Higher trading activity consistently results in lower futures fees.

Gate.io Regulation & Licensing Explained

Gate.io holds regulatory licenses or approvals including TCSP (Hong Kong), DLT Provider (Gibraltar), VFA (Malta), OAM (Italy), AUSTRAC (Australia), Virtual Currency Exchange & Depository (Lithuania), Proprietary Trading (Dubai DMCC), and SCB (Bahamas).

Where is Gate.io Available?

Gate.io operates in over 165 countries globally but restricts access in 30 regions due to regulatory requirements. Currently, restricted locations include the United States, China, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, and several others.

Users should regularly consult Gate.io’s User Agreement for updates on restricted countries and compliance requirements.

Is Gate.io Safe and Legit?

Gate.io is a legitimate cryptocurrency exchange licensed in multiple jurisdictions, including Malta (MFSA), Italy (OAM), and Dubai (DMCC). It maintains robust security measures such as multi-signature wallets, cold storage, MPC encryption, regular proof-of-reserve audits, and ISO 27001 certification.

However, past security incidents, notably an alleged $234 million breach in 2018, and limited oversight by top-tier regulators like the FCA and FinCEN, suggest investors should carefully consider these risks before using the platform.
