Italians can legally buy crypto only from exchanges authorised under the EU's MiCA regulation, either by Consob at home or by a regulator in another member state whose licence is passported into Italy.
That rule has bitten since 30 June 2026, when Italy's transition period ended. Firms on the old OAM register without a licence had to stop serving Italians. Binance now lets Italian users only withdraw and close positions.
The ESMA register of crypto-asset service providers lists 209 firms that may serve Italy. Ten of them are licensed in Italy itself, including Young Platform, Conio and Cryptosmart, and the other 199 passport in from elsewhere in the EU.
On 29 October 2026 we checked every licence against that register and compared euro deposits and spot fees on each exchange's Italian website. The results were then weighed against our exchange rankings.
This guide to the best crypto exchanges in Italy puts spot trading first and treats regulated futures as a bonus. It is not tax or legal advice.

Kraken is the best crypto exchange in Italy because it combines a MiCA licence for spot trading with regulated EU futures, free euro deposits and more than 600 crypto pairs on an Italian-language website.
Your contract is with Payward Europe Solutions Limited, which the Central Bank of Ireland authorised as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) on 25 June 2025. Italy appears in its passport on the ESMA register, and Kraken runs an Italian website and help centre.
Futures sit with a separate company, Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, under CySEC licence 342/17. Before trading them you pass an appropriateness check. Its EEA eligibility rules exclude no EEA country.

Fees are the weak spot. Since the cross-platform tiers of 9 July 2026, Kraken Pro charges 0.40% to makers and 0.80% to takers at the lowest tier. Reserves look healthy, with 102.9% Bitcoin backing in the 30 June 2026 proof of reserves.

Bybit EU is the best exchange in Italy for low flat spot fees and easy card or PayPal funding. It also carries the highest Coinperps global score of any exchange licensed for Italy.
Austria's FMA authorised Bybit EU GmbH as a CASP on 28 May 2025, with Italy included in the passport. You get an Italian website, but the help centre is English only.

SEPA transfers arrive with no deposit fee. The other deposit methods cost 1.1% by card and 1.8% plus €0.24 through PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Futures will have to wait. Sister company Bybit X GmbH applied for an FMA investment licence in September 2025 and is still waiting.
Bybit absorbed a North Korean hack of about $1.5 billion in 2025 and repaid customers in full. Its group proof of reserves put Bitcoin backing at 104% in September 2026. Our Bybit restricted countries guide covers access elsewhere, and you can sign up through Bybit EU.

The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) licensed OKX Europe Limited under MiCA on 27 January 2025. No other exchange in this guide holds a MiCA licence for Italy that includes operating a trading platform.
Open a spot and derivatives account and the Italian fee page charges a regular user 0.08% as a maker and 0.10% as a taker. A spot-only account costs more.
The EEA market list shows 272 euro pairs. Funding works by SEPA transfer, Visa or Mastercard through the Italian website.
For futures, OKX launched X-Perps in April 2026 through MiFID-licensed OKX Europe Markets. They reach all 30 EEA states with up to 10x leverage. On 3 October 2026 the proof of reserves showed 110% Bitcoin backing.
The record has a blemish. In February 2025 OKX pleaded guilty in the US to anti-money laundering failures and paid $505 million. See our OKX restricted countries guide or open an account with OKX.

Young Platform is the best Italian-licensed crypto platform for funding in euros, although it charges more than the global exchanges above it.
The Turin company won its Consob licence on 30 June 2026, the last day of the transition. That licence covers eight of the ten MiCA services, more than any other Italian firm holds. Asset manager Azimut is a shareholder, and Young Platform claims 2 million users.
On the standard Base service you trade against Young Platform itself at a firm quoted price. The fee page builds a spread of 0.40% to 0.80% into that price for large coins such as Bitcoin. A commission comes on top, €1.99 on orders up to €50 and 1.89% above €100. Pro sends limit orders to outside venues for a separate commission, according to the help centre.
Every account comes with its own Italian IBAN. Ordinary and instant bank transfers into it are free. Bancomat Pay costs 2.2%, and cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay cost 2.2% plus €0.25.
You can trade 89 markets, 77 of them against the euro. Staking is available on Ether, Solana, Celestia and Cosmos for a 15% cut of rewards, and the same app holds a payment account and card.
Pros
- Consob licence with Italian-language support and a Turin head office.
- Free instant transfers from an Italian IBAN, plus Bancomat Pay.
- Staking, savings plans and a payment card in one app.
Cons
- A €1,000 Bitcoin purchase costs about 2.3% to 2.7% once the spread is added.
- No order book on the Base service.

Coinbase is a strong choice for beginners in Italy who want a publicly listed exchange with free euro deposits and a simple Italian app.
Luxembourg's CSSF granted Coinbase a MiCA licence on 20 June 2025, and Italian accounts moved to Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. on 15 September. Euro deposits are free, according to the Italian website.
Regular buyers should use Coinbase Advanced. A fee cut on 16 September 2026 brought its EU entry tier to 0.25% for makers and 0.50% for takers, far below app pricing.
Perpetual-style futures with up to 10x leverage appear on the Italian site, offered by Coinbase Financial Services Europe under CySEC licence 374/19. The launch announcement named 26 European countries and left Italy out, so confirm eligibility in the app.
Ireland's central bank fined Coinbase Europe €21.46 million in November 2025 for transaction monitoring failures, and Coinbase disclosed a customer data breach in May 2025. Start with Coinbase or compare its futures arm on our Coinbase page.
Pros
- MiCA licence from Luxembourg and an Italian website.
- Free euro deposits by SEPA.
- Simple app suited to first-time buyers.
Cons
- App purchases cost far more than Coinbase Advanced.
- Futures eligibility for Italy is not confirmed.

Bitpanda suits Italians who want crypto, stocks, ETFs and metals in one app, with PayPal deposits and an Italian tax report.
Bitpanda GmbH is licensed under MiCA by Austria's FMA and passports into Italy. More than 650 cryptocurrencies sit on its Italian website, next to over 10,000 stocks, ETFs and metals.
App trades carry premiums of 0.99% on Bitcoin and stablecoins, 1.49% on most coins and 2.49% on smaller tokens. Switch to Bitpanda Fusion, the exchange interface, and the cost drops to 0.25% for makers and takers below €100,000 a month. SEPA deposits are free. PayPal costs 1.49%.
Milan fans know the brand from the back of AC Milan's shirt, where Bitpanda has been the sponsor since February 2025. Its long-only margin trading goes up to 10x, though it is no substitute for perpetual futures.
The FMA fined Bitpanda GmbH €70,000 in August 2026 for breaching MiCA marketing rules.
Pros
- More than 650 cryptocurrencies plus stocks, ETFs and metals.
- Italian website and an Italian crypto tax report.

Cryptosmart is the cheapest Italian-licensed exchange for mainstream coins, and it is the only one on this list that can calculate and pay your crypto tax for you.
Consob licensed the Perugia company on 24 June 2026. Banca Popolare di Cortona owns 5.1% of it, and customers can phone an Italian support line.
A flat 0.20% applies to buying, selling or converting Bitcoin, Ether, Cardano, Polkadot, Chainlink, Litecoin, USDC and a few more. Less liquid tokens cost 0.90%. Deposits are free, and withdrawing euros to your bank costs €1.
The standout feature arrived in May 2026. Cryptosmart now offers the regime amministrato at no charge, withholding and paying the 33% tax on each gain for you. The catch is a short menu of about 15 coins. Ether staking starts at 0.5 ETH, and there are no futures.
Pros
- 0.20% fees on the main coins and free deposits.
- Free regime amministrato handles your tax on gains.
- Italian phone and chat support.
Cons
- Only about 15 coins.
- No order book, futures or advanced trading tools.
- Small firm with a short track record under MiCA.

How We Ranked These Exchanges
We ranked exchanges first on whether they hold a MiCA licence that covers Italy, then on euro funding, spot costs, Italian-language support and platform strength, following our ranking methodology.
Licence data came from the ESMA register, downloaded on 29 October 2026. Fees came from each exchange's Italian or EU schedule. Binance, Bitget and MEXC hold no licence covering Italy, so their global scores did not count.
Our exchange rankings of liquidity, fees, regulation and features then set the order among licensed venues. Kraken's licences, regulated futures and euro depth put it first. Bybit EU follows on its global score and flat fees. OKX is third, with the lowest fees and the broadest licence.
Home-grown licences weighed more here than in countries without local exchanges. That lifted Young Platform and Cryptosmart, which pair Consob licences with Italian payments and support, even though Young Platform costs more per trade. Futures only broke ties.
Revolut, Crypto.com, Bitvavo and Conio also hold licences covering Italy and narrowly missed the list. Revolut charges 1.49% on standard plans, Crypto.com offers no derivatives in the EEA, Bitvavo sits outside our exchange rankings and Conio focuses on Bitcoin.

Is Crypto Legal in Italy?
Buying, holding and selling crypto is legal in Italy, provided you use an exchange authorised under MiCA by Consob or by another EU regulator with Italy in its passport.
Who Regulates Crypto in Italy
MiCA entered Italian law through Legislative Decree 129/2024. Its Article 3 gives Consob and the Bank of Italy joint authority over crypto service providers. In practice Consob grants each licence after consulting the Bank of Italy, which alone supervises euro stablecoins.
Before MiCA, crypto firms only had to join an anti-money laundering register kept by the OAM, the agents and brokers body, which licensed no one.
The End of the Transition Period
Decree-Law 95/2025 extended Italy's original, shorter transition. Under the amended Article 45, OAM firms that applied by 30 December 2025 could keep operating until 30 June 2026 at the latest. Firms that did not apply had to stop on 30 December 2025.
The OAM register shrank from more than 140 firms in mid-2025 to 35 by December, with 101 cancellations, according to OAM data. When the transition closed, Consob reported nine authorised entities in Italy, and YouHodler Italy joined them in October 2026.
Exchanges That Left Italy
Binance Italy registered with the OAM in 2022 but never obtained a MiCA licence. From 1 July 2026 its Italian users can only withdraw funds and close positions, with no new trading.
Neither Bitget nor MEXC appears on the ESMA register. Gemini still does, yet it closed its EEA accounts on 6 April 2026. KuCoin EU holds an Austrian licence, but the FMA still bars it from starting operations.
How to Check an Exchange's Licence
Search the exchange's legal name in the ESMA register and check that Italy is among its passport countries. Consob also keeps a list of Italian-authorised providers on its MiCA page. Our list of MiCA-licensed exchanges tracks the main venues across the EU.

Italian Crypto Platforms and Banks
Italy has more home-grown licensed crypto firms than most EU countries, but none of them runs an exchange order book, so Italian platforms sell crypto as brokers at a quoted price.
The ESMA register lists ten Italian entries. Nine are Consob-licensed CASPs, including CheckSig, Conio, Cryptosmart, Young Platform, Hodlie, Hercle and YouHodler Italy. The tenth is Banca Sella, which notified the Bank of Italy as a bank.
Bitcoin specialist Conio counts Poste Italiane and Banca Generali among its backers. Customers of the Hype and Banca Generali apps can buy through Conio without leaving their bank, paying 0.99% plus any spread in the price.
Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest bank, bought 11 Bitcoin for its own book in January 2025. Its retail customers still cannot buy any. Banca Sella became the first Italian bank in the MiCA register and plans custody and transfers for selected clients. It also helped found Qivalis, a group of European banks preparing a euro stablecoin.
Then there is Revolut. It has an Italian bank branch and more than 6 million customers in Italy. Its app sells crypto for 1.49% on standard plans, well above what the exchanges in our ranking charge.

How to Buy Crypto With Euros in Italy
The cheapest way to buy crypto in Italy is a free SEPA Instant transfer to a licensed exchange, followed by a limit order on a euro order book.
- Pick an exchange from the ESMA register with Italy in its passport, and verify your identity with an Italian identity card, passport or residence permit plus your codice fiscale.
- Send euros by bonifico istantaneo. Kraken, Bybit EU, Coinbase and Bitpanda charge nothing for SEPA deposits, and Young Platform takes free instant transfers to your own Italian IBAN.
- Avoid card deposits unless speed matters. Cards cost 1.1% at Bybit EU, 2.2% plus €0.25 at Young Platform and 3.75% plus €0.25 at Kraken.
- Use PayPal or Bancomat Pay only for small top-ups. Bybit EU, Kraken and Bitpanda accept PayPal, and only Young Platform accepts Bancomat Pay.
- Buy with a limit order on a euro market. A limit order costs 0.08% to 0.40% on OKX, Bybit EU or Kraken, while app purchases cost 0.99% to 2.49% before spreads.
- Keep every statement and note each wallet, because your annual return must list every crypto holding.
No exchange on this list accepts Satispay directly, but you can top up Satispay and send an ordinary SEPA transfer. Our guide to maker and taker fees explains why limit orders cost less.

Crypto Futures and Leverage Rules in Italy
Italian residents can trade crypto futures legally only through a firm with an EU investment licence under MiFID II, and retail leverage on crypto contracts for difference (CFDs) is capped at 2:1.
Article 2(4) of MiCA confirms that a crypto licence alone cannot cover derivatives, so Bybit EU, Bitpanda, Young Platform and Cryptosmart offer Italians no perpetual futures. In February 2026 ESMA warned that perpetual futures are likely CFDs under EU rules, whatever their commercial name.
Consob has applied ESMA's retail CFD restrictions permanently since 1 August 2019, with leverage caps, margin close-out and negative balance protection. Crypto CFDs for retail clients stay at 2:1.
Two exchanges in our ranking clearly qualify. Kraken offers EEA futures through its CySEC-licensed arm, and OKX sells X-Perps through OKX Europe Markets in Malta. Coinbase advertises futures on its Italian site, though Italy was missing from its launch list.
Offshore exchanges advertising 100x leverage to Italians hold no EU licence. Our guide to perpetual futures regulation and European futures platform ranking go deeper.

Crypto Taxes in Italy
Italian residents pay a flat 33% substitute tax on crypto gains realised from 1 January 2026, up from 26%, with no tax-free allowance.
The 33% Rate
Gains on crypto-assets are "redditi diversi" under article 67, paragraph 1, letter c-sexies of the income tax code (TUIR). Law 207/2024 raised the rate to 33% for gains realised from 1 January 2026, and the same law removed the €2,000 allowance from 2025.
The 2026 Budget Law kept a 26% rate for euro e-money tokens, the euro stablecoins regulated under MiCA. Dollar stablecoins such as USDC are taxed at 33%, and converting euros into a euro e-money token is not a taxable event.
Say you buy €10,000 of Bitcoin and later sell it for €15,000. On the €5,000 gain you owe €1,650 in 2026, where the 2025 rate would have taken €1,300. Keep your purchase records, because an undocumented cost counts as zero.
Swaps, Staking and Losses
Agenzia delle Entrate circular 30/E says swapping one cryptocurrency for another, such as Bitcoin for Ether, is not a taxable event. Swapping crypto for an e-money token such as USDC is taxable, and so is buying an NFT with crypto.
Staking rewards are taxed on their gross value at the same rate. Losses carry forward for four years. Under Agenzia ruling 135/2025 they can offset only crypto gains, never gains on shares or ETFs.
The same circular treats income from crypto derivatives such as CFDs and futures as financial income taxed at 26%. No ruling yet covers perpetual futures on foreign exchanges, so ask a commercialista before relying on that rate.
Quadro RW and the 0.2% Wealth Tax
Each crypto wallet needs its own line in quadro RW of the Redditi PF return, wherever it is held. Gains go in quadro RT. The 2026 return instructions also apply a 0.2% yearly tax on the value of crypto holdings, worked out in row RW8.
If you choose the regime amministrato with an Italian provider such as Cryptosmart, the provider withholds tax on each gain, and those holdings drop out of quadro RW. Foreign exchanges do not act as Italian tax agents, so Kraken, Bybit EU and OKX users file their own return.
DAC8 Reporting Rules
Italy transposed the EU's DAC8 directive through Legislative Decree 194/2025. Crypto providers report each Italian user's 2026 transactions to the Agenzia delle Entrate by 30 June 2027, and existing customers must provide a tax self-certification by 1 January 2027.

Risks and Scams to Watch
Fake trading platforms are the costliest online fraud in Italy, so check every exchange against official lists before sending money.
Fake Investment Sites
Consob has blacked out 1,853 websites offering unauthorised financial services since July 2019, 242 of them crypto-related, as of 23 October 2026. Blackouts of crypto sites picked up after the transition ended in July.
Between January and August 2025, fake online trading took €116 million from victims in cases handled by the Polizia Postale. That was 81% of all money lost to online fraud over those months. Deepfake adverts of public figures and foreign call centres are common tools.
Sponsor Logos Are Not Licences
A football sponsorship proves nothing about safety. Zondacrypto, Atalanta's sleeve sponsor, went bankrupt in Poland in August 2026, while Bitpanda, Gate and WhiteBIT sponsor AC Milan, Inter and Juventus under different licences. Check the register before trusting the shirt.
No Compensation for Crypto
If a crypto exchange fails, no Italian or EU scheme pays you back. MiCA makes exchanges keep client assets separate, which helps, but savings are safer on a hardware wallet with only trading money left on the exchange.
Since the EU Transfer of Funds Regulation took effect, exchanges must check that you own a self-hosted wallet before sending it more than €1,000.

Bottom Line
Kraken is the best crypto exchange in Italy, pairing a MiCA licence with regulated futures, an Italian website and free euro deposits. Bybit EU suits low flat fees and PayPal funding, OKX has the lowest spot fees, and Young Platform and Cryptosmart are the strongest Consob-licensed choices.
Check the ESMA register before you deposit, and budget for 33% tax on gains from 2026. Our guides to France, Spain and Switzerland cover Italy's neighbours.
